Yet another social network, perhaps? Nope! It could simply be a powerful weapon of mass information in B2B.<\/p>\n<h2>First of all, what are RSS feeds?<\/h2>\n<p>RSS feeds aren\u2019t really new, but they\u2019re nevertheless misunderstood and underused.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve already mentioned RSS feeds as applications for monitoring in a previous blog post on market research, but without explaining what they are.<\/p>\n<p>Below is a simple outline to clarify it for you:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Situation 1<\/strong>: Each morning you go to your favourite websites looking for information relevant to your industry (for example, let\u2019s say you work in the packaging industry). You visit the following websites: <a href=\"https:\/\/affaires.lapresse.ca\/\">La Presse affaires<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/lovelypackage.com\/\">Lovely Package<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.packworld.com\/\">Packaging World<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/pakbec.blogspot.ca\/2008\/09\/packaging-of-week-barilla-receives.html\">PakBec<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Situation 2<\/strong>: Imagine the opposite: if instead of having to visit all those websites one at a time, you received all their news in a software program or an application. That would be pretty interesting, wouldn\u2019t it? This is what RSS feeds do.<\/p>\n<h2>Advantages and disadvantages<\/h2>\n<p>You can become the \u201creference\u201d at work for knowing what\u2019s going on in your industry by spending no more than 30 minutes a day on a news aggregator. You\u2019ll save time, become more efficient and be able to use this application to do efficient monitoring.<\/p>\n<p>The pros and cons in the case where you manage a corporate blog? First of all, having RSS feeds is seen by RSS feed users as the norm, and it would be a mistake not to offer them.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The pros<\/strong>: More efficient diffusion of your news items and, thus, a potentially larger audience.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The cons<\/strong>: Your news items will be \u201cdrowned out\u201d in a panoply of information: your readers might subscribe to many sites and blogs where hundreds of news items will be sent to them everyday via RSS feeds. Moreover, it\u2019s not easy to insert visual effects, so it\u2019s not really possible to insert non-textual advertising.<\/p>\n<h2>Some tips to get started<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>&#8211; Once you\u2019ve chosen your reader, begin by adding the sites that you visit. To find an RSS feed quickly, look for the orange symbol:<\/li>\n<li>&#8211; After you\u2019ve clicked on the symbol, you\u2019ll be asked to choose a reader to add your news feed to your aggregator.<\/li>\n<li>&#8211; If you don\u2019t see this menu, you can always copy the address given (it must contain \u201cfeed\u201d in the address). For example, for Exo Marketing\u2019s blog:<\/li>\n<li>&#8211; Next, paste the link where indicated by your chosen reader, for example in Netvibes:<\/li>\n<li>&#8211; And here\u2019s what a news feed looks like:<\/li>\n<li>&#8211; Some helpful advice: go to Google News and search for something specific (ideally with quotation marks, functions AND and OR, etc.). For example, if I want to monitor a competitor named \u201cXYZ Packaging,\u201d in the search engine bar I enter &#8220;XYZ packaging&#8221; (with the quotation marks). Now look at the bottom of page of search results, and you should find the RSS logo. If you click on it, Google will give you a link that will let you receive, if there are any, news items about your competitor.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>What applications would you suggest?<\/h2>\n<p>Since the recent closure of Google Reader, I had to find an alternative solution, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.netvibes.com\/\"><strong>Netvibes<\/strong><\/a>, which works online. I can\u2019t say whether or not it\u2019s the best, but I\u2019m satisfied for now.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some other solutions, although there are thousands out there:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>&#8211; Microsoft Outlook<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8211;\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cloud.feedly.com\/\">Feedly reader<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8211;\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/reader.curata.com\/\">Curata Reader<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8211;\u00a0Digg reader<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8211;\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/reader.aol.com\/\">AOL Reader<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8211; Thunderbird<\/strong> (available for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnetfrance.fr\/telecharger\/thunderbird-39805581s.htm\">Windows<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnetfrance.fr\/telecharger\/thunderbird-39805603s.htm\">Mac<\/a>)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This way, you\u2019ll stay informed \u201clike a boss!\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>You probably see them often but have rarely wondered about RSS feeds (\u201cReally Simple Syndication\u201d).
